Health and Safety Courses Reading

Construction Industry Training Courses in Reading

On a construction site, there is risk everywhere and it is the responsibility of everyone from the apprentice to the site manager to look out for hazards and operate in a safe and responsible way to protect themselves and others from harm. We provide a range of health and safety courses in Reading that are suitable for those just starting out in construction to those that run sites or teams.
Harrington Safety is an independent training provider meaning we provide flexible training with the choice of half day, full day, weekend and online courses for your CITB qualifications. We are able to train just one person or an entire workforce or team, and adapt our approach to suit you making it truly personal to your business.
The courses we run are all led by experienced industry professionals with history working on site, giving them a full understanding of the challenges construction workers face. The courses are fully interactive, and we encourage class discussions and group work to make the information easy to understand and memorable.
Our training courses in Reading include general health and safety, first aid, working at height, SMSTS, SSSTS, CITB and Face Fit Testing. All of our courses and qualifications are recognised by the relevant governing bodies in each area and upon competition you will receive a certificate that is valid for five years, we also provide refresher courses for when these need to be renewed.
For those looking to obtain their CSCS green card, we provide the HSA course that forms part of your qualification. You will need to also take an environmental touch screen test to fulfil your requirements as part of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme. A CSCS card is often the minimum requirement for any workers on site and is aimed at ensuring everyone working within the industry operates with the very best health and safety knowledge.

Health and Safety Training

We offer general health and safety training in Reading with a variety of half day courses which you can mix and match to create a training day to suit your employee or workforce. Among our Reading health and safety courses there is the topic choice of abrasive wheels, petrol driven cut off saws, manual handling, Cat and Genny and asbestos awareness.
Within the abrasive wheel training, delegates will be taught about the selection and fitting of abrasive wheels. This is taught in conjunction with the manufacturer’s guidelines and current legislation. Within the course, each of the different types of wheels and discs as well as their different functions will be covered.
Petrol driven cut off saws are becoming increasingly responsible for accidents on site, our course aims to make users aware of the risks of using this equipment and how to operate it safely to minimise injuries.
Manual handling is frequently something we are introduced to in health and safety training but it can often be forgotten in the course of our everyday work. Our training covers the safe handling and carrying of objects to avoid personal injury. Working on a construction site can often mean handling and moving heavy items so it is important to remember how to do this safely.
Cat and Genny training will introduce users to how to use a Cat and Genny to locate underground services in compliance with HSG47 – allowing for groundwork and excavation without the damage or exposure to cables and services running below ground – helping to avoid any risks and injury.
Finally, asbestos awareness will inform delegates how to identify possible asbestos containing materials to avoid risk of exposure to themselves, others and the environment.

First Aid

First aid is an essential skill for anyone, whether they work on a construction site or not, however because of the high risks of accidents and injury on a working site – it is important to know the basics of administering first aid to provide the best early intervention care.
Our first aid courses in Reading will provide delegates with the practical skills, knowledge and confidence to react to accidents and emergencies to ensure they can give the best care to the injured person while waiting for the ambulance or until the patient can make it to the hospital or a doctor.
The first aid training courses in Reading that we provide cover emergency first aid, first aid at work and mental health. We have included mental health first aid because this is becoming increasingly important with high levels of mental health issues within the construction industry. This training provides an understanding of how to support others and signpost them to helpful resources to get the help they need.

CITB Courses

CITB stands for Construction Industry Training Board. It is a range of training to provide construction workers with the understanding of hazards that can pose risks on site, as well as the legislation that is in place to protect themselves, others on site and those who have the responsibility for running a safe site.
Our CITB courses in Reading can be provided online, including the same content as our classroom training but provided over Zoom. With our online CITB training, a trainer will be live on video along with other delegates taking the course. Like a classroom session, there will be discussions, quizzes and activities, as well as interaction being encouraged to help the delegates engage with the course. When signing up for an online course, there will be a link provided to join the online session, the device you use will need to have access to the internet with a webcam and microphone.
Any required exams will still take place as usual, conducted online and invigilated by the trainer via the webcam.

SMSTS Courses

SMSTS stands for Site Management Safety Training Scheme and is designed for anyone who oversees other workers such as site managers and supervisors. Our Reading SMSTS course is five days and includes a mix of case studies, class discussions and group work – delegates are encouraged to be fully interactive and it may be necessary to complete self-study outside of the course to build up their knowledge.
The course will cover aspects such as CDM regulations, confined spaces, demolition, scaffolding, electricity, excavations and working at height as well as important legislation so delegates will receive a full understanding of construction health and safety.

SSSTS Courses

SSSTS stands for Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme and is aimed at site supervisors as the name would suggest. It covers the legal responsibilities of site supervisors covering aspects such as health and safety, welfare and environmental issues.
This course is two days and consists of classroom discussions, group work and an individual or group presentation. There will be assessment throughout the training as well as a multiple choice test at the end of the course to evaluate the knowledge learned.
Delegates will cover health and safety legislation, specific site issues supervisors are likely to encounter, supervision of occupational health, behavioural safety and how to deliver effective toolbox talks.

CSCS Green Card Certification

It is now a requirement of many construction companies that site workers hold a CSCS green card certification. As part of your qualification to obtain your card you will need to complete a one day HSA course which we can provide. This will form one half of your qualification and will need to followed up with a touch screen environmental test. Once this is complete, it is valid for five years.

Work at Height Courses

Working at height obviously has its risks and it is important to know how to work safely when working in areas where there is a risk of falling for example, using scaffolding, ladders, platforms or powered access equipment. It is one of the biggest reasons for fatal and serious injuries in a construction environment making it essential that adequate training is given for working safely at height.
Our working at height courses in Reading feature a range of half day courses which can either be taken alone or matched with another relevant course to create a bespoke training day. To help with the understanding of this course, we can provide this training on site where the required facilities exist so that this training can be provided in context. The trainer will cover harness use, harness inspection, steps, ladders, harness and leading edge as well as be aware of what hazards to look out for.
We also provide a ½ day Harness and Leading Edge training course. This course has been designed for anyone working at height who has to use personal fall protection harnesses, lanyards or fall arrest blocks. The half day course will help the delegate to be confident in their ability to select the correct personal fall protection equipment for the work that they are doing, and enable them to be competent in pre-use inspection of the equipment.
Working at height training courses in Reading are essential for operating safely and reducing the risk to workers and others on site.

Face Fit Testing

When working with dust, fibres and fumes that can be harmful if inhaled, it is important that face fit testing is carried out to make sure suitable face masks are fitted correctly to ensure adequate protection. If you have workers that are required to wear respiratory protection equipment (RPE), it is important that they or a supervisor have an understanding of the importance of using correctly fitted masks.
As part of our face fit testing in Reading, delegates are required to complete a taste test to ensure they can taste the solution ahead of the test. During the fit test, the delegate will need to complete a series of exercises to ensure the mask does not move and that the solution cannot be tasted within the mask.
It is a requirement that those who need to wear RPE should not have facial hair as this can compromise the fit of the mask and allow leaks into the mask. It is highly recommended to be repeated (redone) every two years to ensure the fit is correct.
On this course, delegates will gain the knowledge of the different types of masks available as well as gaining valuable information on how to look after and maintain the masks. This training should be repeated every two years.
