When it comes to health and safety training, there are so many different accreditations out there. Abbreviations of training boards and the qualifications themselves can all start to blend into one, and this has led to some people thinking that CITB and CSCS are the same. Understanding which course is right for you will ensure that you are able to carry out your work safely and legally, as well as it having a whole host of career benefits too. So here is everything you need to know about CITB courses online, CSCS cards and how we are here to help you.

What is CITB?

First of all, what is CITB? CITB stands for Construction Industry Training Board, so right away, we are looking at a training board rather than a specific course. Some of the most popular CITB courses that you can take today are:

  • Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) – a 5-day course for site managers
  • Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) – a 2-day course for site supervisors
  • Health and Safety Awareness (HSA) – a leading 1-day health and safety course

If you have an in-date SMSTS or SSSTS, you can sit refresher courses that allow you to retain the certification for another five years without having to complete the whole course again.

What about CSCS?

So what is CSCS then? The CSCS is the Construction Skills Certification Scheme designed to make sure that workers have the skills and knowledge to carry out their jobs safely and competently. CSCS cards come in different colours, with each one showing the level they are qualified to and what kind of jobs they are able to perform. This is really helpful for employers, as they can quickly see which of their team members are able to work on certain projects.

Which one is right for me?

So which should you be pursuing? A CITB qualification or gaining a CSCS card? It really depends on your circumstances! If you are looking to gain a CSCS card, then you can take the CITB Health and Safety Awareness course to help you gain a Green card. This will open doors to working on most UK construction sites.

If you are looking to cement yourself as a skilled manager or supervisor, then a CITB course like the SMSTS or SSSTS is a great option. Although you can’t obtain a CSCS card through completing either of those, you can add SSSTS or SMSTS to the My CSCS app.
