Construction Industry Training Courses in Heathrow
For the safety of everyone on site and the general public, it is important for everybody on a construction site to be able to identify hazards and prevent the risk of accidents occurring. From the apprentice to the site manager, we all need to take responsibility for creating a safe environment.
For this reason, health and safety training has become an important investment for the construction industry, by its nature it is a dangerous job, so it is important to take measures to prevent accidents where possible.
We provide a range of health and safety courses in Heathrow that are suitable for all levels of construction workers, from those just starting out in the industry to experienced workers running sites or teams.
As an independent training provider, we are able to provide training courses that can be flexible to your business, with a choice of half day, full day, weekend and online courses to choose from to help delegates achieve their CITB courses and qualifications. Courses can be arranged for just one person to an entire workforce, we will work with you to provide the best approach for your business.
All of our courses are led by industry professionals who have experience working on a construction site, with a full understanding of the potential challenges and demands. They have a realistic view of applying health and safety practise on site and they run the courses in an interactive way so that every delegate feels comfortable to take part in class discussions, group work and ask questions so that it makes it easy to digest the information and remember it.
Our training courses in Heathrow include general health and safety, first aid, working at height, SMSTS, SSSTS, CITB and Face Fit Testing. The courses and qualifications we provide are recognised fully by the relevant governing body and certificates are valid for five years in most cases, following which you can take a refresher course to have this renewed.
We also provide the HSA course that forms part of the qualification required for the CSCS green card. This will need to be accompanied with an environmental touch screen test to meet the requirements of the Construction Skills Certificate Scheme. A CSCS card is usually the minimum requirement for any construction staff to ensure everybody is working in a safe and responsible manner.
Health and Safety Training
We provide a number of health and safety courses in Heathrow that are half day, so they can easily fit around the working day or be combined with another half day course to cover the necessary training needed. Our training courses in Heathrow cover abrasive wheels, petrol driven cut off saws, manual handling, Cat and Genny and asbestos awareness.
Manual handling is often the most common form of health and safety training across all industries but can easily be forgotten while on the job. This training provides techniques for the safe handling of heavy objects and how to avoid obtaining a personal injury or long term pain. This is particularly relevant on a construction site due to the frequent handling of heavy materials.
Petrol driven cut off saws can be responsible for many accidents on site, which is why our course is important for anyone who will be using them. The course will provide them with a knowledge of the possible risks and how to operate this tool is the safest way to minimise injuries occurring.
Our abrasive wheel training teaches delegates about selecting and fitting abrasive wheels in line with the manufacturer’s guidelines and current legislation. This course covers each of the different types of wheels and disks that can be used and how to operate this tool safely.
A Cat and Genny is a vital tool for locating and identifying any underground service lines in compliance with HSG47, this course will cover how to use this tool for groundwork and excavation, avoiding damage or exposure to cables running underground as well as potential injury.
Asbestos is a risk we are all aware of. The Asbestos Awareness course will provide delegates with knowledge on how to handle asbestos safely and dispose of it in a responsible way.
First Aid
With any accidents or injuries, timing is everything, and first aid is an essential skill for everyone – whether they work in a high risk environment or not. Knowing the basics of administering first aid on site is the best way to provide early intervention care before the individual can be transferred to hospital – minimising the long term effects.
Our first aid courses in Heathrow are aimed at providing delegates with the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to react quickly in an emergency to provide the best care until a medical professional can step in.
The first aid training courses in Heathrow that we provide cover emergency first aid, first aid at work and mental health first aid. Mental health first aid is becoming increasingly in demand, particularly in the construction sector, where there are high levels of mental health issues. This training will allow delegates to provide support and signpost them to helpful resources and services.
CITB Courses
The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) is the governing board for providing training to the construction industry. Its aim is to ensure construction workers have a knowledge and understanding of potential hazards on site, along with the legislation that is in place to keep them, and others safe as well as understanding who has responsibility for running a site in a safe and responsible way.
Our range of CITB Courses in Heathrow are available as classroom based learning as well as online, meaning we are able to meet the current challenges we faced during the Coronavirus pandemic. These online CITB courses are provided over Zoom but provide the same information as you would receive in person. Our online CITB training is conducted over live video with a trainer and other delegates on the course.
Much like you would experience in classroom training, there are discussions, quizzes and activities and interaction is still greatly encouraged by delegates and the trainer. Those who sign up for the online course will be provided with a link to join the online session at a dedicated time and delegates will need to have access to the internet, a webcam and a microphone.
Exams take place as usual, but are conducted online and invigilated by the trainer via the webcam. Upon successful completion of your chosen CITB course, you will receive a CITB accredited certificate valid for 5 years.
SMSTS Courses
The Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) is a course designed for workers who oversee others on site, such as site managers and supervisors. Our Heathrow SMSTS course is a five day course which includes a mix of case studies, class discussions and group work. The training is designed and encouraged to be fully interactive.
Across the course, delegates will cover subjects such as CDM regulations, confined spaces, demolition, scaffolding, electricity, excavations and working at height as well as all the relevant legislation which covers this.
SSSTS Courses
Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) is for site supervisors and covers the legal responsibilities that they hold such as health and safety, welfare and environmental issues.
Our SSSTS courses in Heathrow are two days long and involve classroom discussions, group work and an individual or group presentation to demonstrate learning. There will also be a multiple choice test at the end to evaluate the knowledge gained.
Within the course, delegates will cover health and safety legislation, specific site issues that are commonly encountered, the supervision of occupational health, behavioural safety and how to present effective toolbox talks to staff.
CSCS Green Card Certification
If you are looking to obtain your CSCS green card certification, you will need to complete two qualifications to qualify. One of these is a one day HSA course that we can provide at Harrington Safety, this will form one half of your qualification and will need to be followed up a touch screen environmental test.
Once you have obtained both of these, you will qualify for your CSCS Green Card which is valid for five years.
Work at Height Courses
By its very nature, working at height is dangerous and carries risks. When working at height, it is vital to know how to work safely and use scaffolding, ladders, platforms and powered access equipment in the correct way.
Working at height is one of the biggest causes of fatal and serious injuries, which makes health and safety training so important to ensure everybody works in the safest way with full PPE.
The working at height courses in Heathrow that we provide consist of a range of half day courses that can be taken singularly or paired with another one or two courses to create a tailored training day. Training can be provided on site where the required facilities exist, helping to add context to the training.
Courses cover harness use, harness inspection, steps, ladders, harness and leading edge as well as identifying potential hazards.
The half day harness and leading edge training course in Heathrow is aimed at anyone who will be working at height and needs to use a personal fall protection harness, lanyards or a fall arrest block. The course is designed to provide delegates with the confidence to select the correct personal fall protection equipment to support the work they are doing as well as complete a full pre-use inspection of the equipment.
We recommend our working at height training courses in Heathrow for anybody that will be working at height such as scaffolders, bricklayers and roofers to name but a few.
Face Fit Testing
If working with fumes or debris that can be dangerous with either instant or prolonged exposure, it is important to ensure that PPE is used and face fit testing ensures that full face masks are fitted correctly to each individual and prevents leaks and exposure.
During our face fit testing in Heathrow, delegates will need to complete a taste test to ensure they can taste a solution ahead of the test. When the fit test is in progress, they will need to complete a series of exercises to see if the mask moves. The fit is complete when the solution cannot be tasted within the mask anymore.
For those wearing respiratory protection equipment (RPE) it is requested that they do not have facial hair as this can compromise the effectiveness of the mask and allow leaks. Face fit testing should be repeated every two years to ensure the fit remains correct.
Within this course, delegates are taught how to ensure a safe and secure fit of their mask (to provide face fit testing) and what the different types of masks available are. This training should be repeated every two years.
