Construction Industry Training Courses in Ruislip
The environment of a construction site can be dangerous. It is vital that health and safety is managed effectively, and everyone on site must be able to identify hazards and operate in the safest way to prevent accidents from happening.
Harrington Safety are providers of health and safety courses in Ruislip, which are designed primarily for the construction industry. As an independent training provider, we can provide a flexible approach to training courses in Ruislip for our clients with a choice of half day, full day, weekend PASMA and IPAF courses and online CITB courses.
We have a range of half day courses to choose from which can be paired with another half day course to create a tailored training day. We can provide training courses in Ruislip for 1 or 2 individuals or an entire workforce either at the workplace, a training centre or via Zoom.
Our team of trainers consists of experienced industry professionals who have previously worked on site. Their time working in the sector provides them with an understanding of the challenges and demands of a construction site and helps shape their course material and teaching style. All of our courses are designed to be interactive rather than simply relaying information. Training consists of a mix of group work, activities and quizzes to make the course material easier to digest and questions are encouraged to clarify anything they don’t understand.
Our training courses in Ruislip are designed to cover all areas of workplace safety such as general health and safety, IPAF, PASMA, first aid, working at height, CITB, SMSTS, SSSTS and face fit testing. These are just some of the courses we provide. We have a range of courses for all levels of workers, from those just starting out to site directors. Our courses are all endorsed by the appropriate governing body and once completed are valid for up to 5 years, with many providing refresher courses to keep the qualification current.
For those looking to obtain their CSCS green card, it is required to pass 2 qualifications. We provide the HSA course that forms one half of the qualification. This will need to be followed up by an environmental touch screen test to receive the card. Many employers and construction sites require a CSCS card as the minimum requirement. A CSCS green card shows a basic understanding of the health and safety practises required on site.
Health and Safety Training
Our range of general health and safety training consists of half day courses, which can either be taken alone or combined with another to create an appropriate training day. The Ruislip health and safety courses we offer include manual handling, asbestos awareness, abrasive wheels, petrol drive cut off saws and Cat and Genny training.
Manual handling is something that is vital across all industries, but particularly in the construction industry which often involves transporting heavy materials across site. It is important to know how to correctly lift and carry to avoid any long term injuries that can impact work such as back pain and musculoskeletal issues. This course reiterates the importance of taking manual handling seriously.
The asbestos awareness training covers the risks involved in encountering asbestos and how to identify and reduce exposure safely and responsibly.
Abrasive wheels and petrol driven cut off saws can be dangerous and are responsible for many injuries, therefore it is important anyone using these tools understands how to operate them safely and in line with the guidance from the manufacturer as well as current legislation. The trainer will teach delegates how to operate these tools safely to avoid injury and cover common mistakes and hazards. The course also incorporates the different functions of each wheel and disk and what type of work it is appropriate for.
For those completing groundwork or excavation, a Cat and Genny is an essential tool for identifying any underground service lines. It is important to work in compliance with HSG47 and ensure these are not damaged during your work to prevent disruption to the area or injury to workers.
IPAF Training Courses
The International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) is the number one accrediting body and authority for mobile elevated work platforms – which are more commonly referred to by the acronym MEWPs. IPAF courses are very popular, and over 100,000 people take them every single year.
There are a number of different categories of IPAF training courses available. We offer a full range of IPAF training, the most popular being the dual category 3a – mobile vertical (scissor lift) and 3b – mobile boom (cherry picker) course.
You’ll be pleased to know that Harrington Safety are an accredited IPAF approved training centre – so all of our training is carried out by our team of experienced professionals with all the benefits that this entails. We provide training for operators, supervisors and managers and our courses vary in length from half day to 1 day. With our help, you and your team will gain the skills and knowledge that you need.
PASMA Training Courses
The Prefabricated Access Supplier’s and Manufacturers’ Association (PASMA) is the leading international accrediting body and authority for mobile access towers. They are globally recognised, and their international reputation has made PASMA courses some of the most popular that we provide here at Harrington Safety. So needless to say, prompt booking is essential.
We are an accredited PASMA training centre, and we are able to offer a wide range of courses for our valued clients to take their pick from. Delegates will be able to take part in courses covering towers for users, low level access, towers on stairs, towers with cantilevers, working at height, towers for managers and towers for bridging.

First Aid
As we are all aware, first aid is an important skill for anyone to have, but is particularly essential for anyone working on a construction site. It is important to have a selection of first aid trained individuals on site should an accident occur to provide initial care while waiting for the medical professionals to arrive.
Our first aid courses in Ruislip provide a basic understanding of first aid and what early intervention can be provided. The courses provide delegates with both practical skills, knowledge and confidence to treat a range of injuries such as cuts, grazes, burns, electrocution, cardiac arrest, broken limbs or concussion to name a few.
Following this training, in an emergency situation they should be able to safely assess, triage and treat people in a safe and considered way to protect themselves and others.
The first aid courses in Ruislip that we provide feature general first aid, first aid at work and mental health first aid. Mental health first aid has become an increasingly important service to allow colleagues to identify someone they can turn to for mental health support and helpful resources. Mental health is a rising issue within the construction industry and this course provides a vital additional form of support.
CITB Courses
The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) is the governing body that oversees training in the construction industry. Courses are designed to provide delegates with the ability to spot and avoid hazards on site. Harrington Safety is an accredited CITB provider and we provide CITB courses in Ruislip for all levels of workers from apprentices to site supervisors and directors.
As an independent training provider, we are able to provide our CITB training in Ruislip in the way that best suits your business, be that at a training centre, on site or online. Understandably, during the Coronavirus pandemic, our online CITB training has become increasingly popular allowing delegates to learn from their own home. The training we provide online is identical to the courses we provide in person, with plenty of opportunity to interact, ask questions and work with other delegates. Those attending the course will be sent a link to the Zoom session in advance of the training and will need access to the internet, a camera and a microphone.
Tests will take place as usual, however online tests are invigilated by the trainer via the camera feed. Following successful completion of the course, the CITB certification will be posted and is valid for 5 years.
SMSTS Courses
Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) is a CITB accredited course designed for those overseeing others work on site such as supervisors, managers and directors. The course takes place over 5 days and consists of looking at case studies, class discussions and group work.
Our SMSTS course in Ruislip covers the legislation that is in place and the different elements of site safety as well as how to manage and monitor safety on site. Following successful completion, delegates will receive a CITB Site Safety Plus certificate valid for 5 years which can be followed up by a refresher course to keep the qualification valid and knowledge current.
SSSTS Courses
The Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) is aimed at site supervisors. The course covers the legal responsibility they have to manage health and safety, welfare and environment for other workers. The course looks at the relevant legislation and is presented in an interactive format to make it easy to understand and apply.
The SSSTS courses in Ruislip are across 2 days and include class discussions, individual or group presentations which are assessed throughout as well as a multiple-choice test at the end to confirm the knowledge gained by the delegate.
Delegates who successfully pass the SSSTS training in Ruislip will gain a CITB Site Survey Plus certificate which is valid for 5 years and can be followed up by a refresher course to keep the qualification valid and knowledge up to date.
CSCS Green Card Certification
The requirements to gain a CSCS green card certification require the individual to complete 2 courses to qualify. One half of this is the HSA course we provide in Ruislip covering basic health and safety. This will need to be followed up with a touch screen environment test. Following the successful completion of both of these courses, delegates are able to obtain a CSCS green card.
Work at Height Courses
It will come as no surprise that working at height is one of the most common causes of fatal or serious injury at work. Therefore it is important that anyone who will be working above the ground needs to understand how to do so safely.
We provide a range of working at height courses in Ruislip to choose from, including safe harness use, harness inspection, using steps and ladders safely, harness and leading edge as well as general working at height awareness and best practice.
The Harness and Leading Edge training course is designed for anyone working at height who will need to use a personal fall protection harness, lanyard or fall arrest block. Delegates will leave with an understanding of how to use this equipment correctly and carry out an efficient inspection prior to use.
All of the working at height courses in Ruislip are half day, so can be partnered with another half day course to create a tailored training day.
Face Fit Testing
For those who will be working amongst harmful fumes and need to wear respiratory protection equipment (RPE), it is important to undergo fact fit testing to ensure full face masks fit correctly and efficiently to prevent any dangerous fumes from leaking in.
Our face fit testing in Ruislip will ensure RPE fits correctly and provide delegates with the knowledge of how to wear and check their RPE correctly as well as learning about the different types of RPE available. Face fit testing cannot be undertaken if you are not clean shaven, facial hair will always cause leaks in the mask fitting.
Face fit testing in Ruislip begins with a taste test to see if the delegate can taste the test solution which will be a bitter tasting aerosol. This is important to ensure the test can be carried out accurately. Before this, it is asked that delegates do not eat or drink (except water), chew gum, smoke or vape for an hour before the testing begins.
Once the taste test is complete, the fit test can begin. Delegates will need to complete a series of different exercises in the mask to see if they can taste the solution and continues until the test solution is no longer noticed.
Face fit testing should be completed every 2 years or if there any changes in appearance such as weight loss or weight gain.
