Everything You Need to Know
MEWPs are a common sight on construction sites, but that doesn’t mean that their use should be taken lightly. Failing to follow correct safety procedures can lead to serious accidents and even death, so knowing how to use them correctly is so important. From taking an IPAF course with us to what MEWP categories you need to be aware of, here is your complete guide.
What are MEWPs?
First of all, what are MEWPs? MEWP stands for Mobile Elevating Work Platform, and there are several different types of MEWPs that are used on construction sites.
Which one you use will depend on your role and the type of construction project that is being carried out. The categories are as follows:
- 1a: Static vertical (track, trailer and truck mounts)
- 1b: Static boom (track, trailer and truck mounts)
- 3a: Mobile scissor lifts
- 3b: Self-propelled boom (articulating & stick booms)
- PAV: Push around vertical
- Specialist Machines
The training is category-specific, and what training you complete will depend on the type of MEWP you are using. Don’t worry, we can point you in the right direction.
What are the laws relating to safe use of MEWPs?
A MEWP should always be operated by someone who has completed a recognised operator training course and received a licence listing the categories of MEWP they are trained for. They should also be given time to familiarise themselves with the specific controls of the MEWP that is being used on site.
Take an IPAF course
Before anything else, make sure that you have completed all the necessary training! Not only will this ensure that you are working in full compliance with the law, but it will also give you the skills and knowledge you need to operate MEWPs safely and confidently. Once you have successfully completed an IPAF course, you will feel much more capable in making the right decisions in a fast-paced work environment like a construction site.
Safety tips
Your IPAF course will show you how to operate a MEWP safely, but it is always worth bearing the following in mind:
- Select the right MEWP for the job, weighing up the pros and cons of different types
- Make sure that the ground is suitable for the MEWP you’re using
- Prevent falls from height by making sure that guard rails or harnesses are used as required
- Consider postponing work if the weather forecast looks poor, and stop immediately if sudden bad weather strikes that could interfere with safety
- Have a MEWP with a secondary guarding device fitted to reduce the risk of crushing or trapping
- Ensure that your team members feel comfortable raising any concerns, and listen to them if they do
- Think about having a MEWP spotter in place while you’re operating the MEWP
