Broken down into three courses you now have the Harness Awareness (HA) course which is theory only and perfect for those that do not personally wear a harness but may plan, manage or supervise the use of a Harness in a MEWP. The Harness User (HU) training and assessment session is a follow on to the Harness Awareness theory and is essential for anyone what will personally use a harness in a MEWP. It includes pre-use inspections but will not qualify the user to carry out Statutory, periodic inspections on behalf of others or an organisation. About the course
The IPAF Harness Awareness course is designed to provide individuals with the necessary knowledge to supervise, manage and plan the use of harnesses when working in MEWPS. This theory only course must be completed in order to be trained for the IPAF Harness User or Harness Inspection qualification.
IPAF stands for the International Powered Access Federation, which is a global organisation dedicated to promoting the safe and effective use of powered access equipment. IPAF Harness courses are some of the most respected and widely recognised in the construction sector.
Course contents
You will cover the following during the IPAF Harness (HA) training course, this is a theory only course and can be delivered either in a classroom with an instructor or online via IPAFs eLearning system;
- Legislation and regulations: Participants will learn about all legislation and regulations related to working at height and the use of harnesses. This includes understanding the responsibilities of employers and employees in maintaining a safe working environment on site.
- Hazards and risks: The course highlights the various hazards and risks associated with working at height in MEWPs (Mobile Elevated Work Platforms), including falls from height and the potential consequences. Participants will learn how to identify potential hazards and how to take action to prevent accidents from occurring.
- Types of harnesses and equipment: Different types of harnesses and fall protection equipment will be discussed, from full-body harnesses through to lanyards and connectors. You will also learn about the components of a harness and how to pre-use inspect them for wear and damage.
- Selection and fitting of harnesses: Proper selection and fitting of harnesses is nothing short of essential. The course will show you how to pick the appropriate harness for specific tasks and body types. Should you be following this training with the IPAF Harness User course (HU), you’ll also learn how to correctly adjust and fit harnesses to ensure comfort, mobility, and maximum protection while you or your team members work.
- Safe use and inspection: Proper techniques for connecting and disconnecting harnesses to anchor points and MEWPs are covered in the training. You will also learn how to conduct pre-use inspections of harnesses and associated equipment, so you can spot any defects or signs of wear that may impact user safety.
- Emergency procedures and rescue plans: The course provides an overview of emergencies and the importance of having rescue plans in place
Completing your training
To gain your IPAF Harness certificate (PAL card), you will need to complete a multiple-choice test upon completion of this theory only training session. All our harness awareness training sessions are either led by experienced industry professionals, who will be able to share valuable insight with you as you learn or via the IPAF online eLearning theory system.
